Wedding Party for Two: Eloping in Elegant Fashion on the Island

A couple can put their personal stamp on wedding festivities even if it’s as private as a wedding party of two.

Regina Wolfrey and Bruce Lewis of Mattapoisett have been visiting the Vineyard at least once every summer for the past six years. When they became engaged in October 2008 they decided to elope to the Vineyard in February.

They chose the Gay Head Lighthouse as a place to marry because of its spectacular views. “We thought a lighthouse was intimate and cozy for a ceremony with no guests,” Ms. Lewis said.

On Friday they arrived at the Mansion House Inn and dined on burgers and sandwiches at Zephrus that evening. With only justice of the peace John Alley in attendance, they ventured out to Aquinnah on that snowy Saturday for an elegant but low-key ceremony.

The bride’s entire ensemble — dress, jacket, heels, right down to the snow boots — came from J Crew. There were no flowers. A little beachcombing for pretty shells provided them with mementos.

After the ceremony and pictures they went back to Vineyard Haven and had pizza at Beetlebung Coffee House. “We were so exhausted from the events of the day that we passed out early and missed dinner,” Ms. Lewis said.

The couple spent their honeymoon snowboarding in Lake Tahoe, Calif., but plan to celebrate each anniversary back on the Vineyard.
