Sketches of Dream Dresses Put Designs on the Future

The Gazette asked students of Lorraine Parish’s fashion design class to sketch some chic looks for Vineyard wedding parties. Since last November, the girls have met weekly to study the mode in costuming from the earliest civilizations to the present.

For the exercise in wedding gown design, they chose to interpret the styles of the 1920s and ’30s to create an elegant look for a bride of the 21st century. Some are simple designs that are still sophisticated, others are glamorous and high style; Lorrane Menezes drew a bridesmaid’s gown of blue and gold with a pouffy skirt, August Welles shows a bride in chiffon flounces and a bolero jacket, Leah Fortes designed a dress for a bridesmaid in two shades of blue with an exotic headpiece, and Julia Guerin envisions a yellow sheath in four-ply crepe with a lace insert for a second wedding.

Evidently, these young designers don’t see their brides in casual frocks. “They’re all feathers and pearls!” Ms. Parish said.
